What is Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction uses a metal rod called a cannula that is inserted into the body and used to remove subcutaneous fat. In order to do this, doctors would put a patient under with general anesthesia, which, in itself, carries a number of health risks.
Newer types of liposuction, called microcannular liposuction, use much smaller cannulas to perform the procedure, and integrates the use of lasers to break down the fat. Patients are fully awake during this procedure, and are locally anesthetized with lidocaine beforehand. This type of liposuction, called SmartLipo, often produces much smoother, more effective results for patients who undergo this particular treatment.
