What is SmartLipo?
Liposuction is one of today’s most highly sought-after cosmetic surgeries. Performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, it is an effective means to remove stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond well to diet and exercise; smoothing and contouring the body. Liposuction was first developed in the 1970s as a “dry” technique which required general anesthesia and had a high complication rate. In the 1980s liposuction techniques were improved, culminating in the safest form of liposuction, known as tumescent microcannular liposuction. With this technique, a diluted anesthetic fluid is instilled into the areas to be treated (tumescence). The addition of fluid allows fat to be removed more comfortably through very small tubes called microcannulas while the patient is awake and comfortable.
In 2007 liposuction evolved even further when the FDA approved SmartLipo, as the first laser device for the dissolution of fat. The addition of the SmartLipo laser prior to suctioning offers several advantages. The removal of fat is easier making it less traumatic on the patient. The laser decreases the amount of bruising due to the coagulation of vessels and also seems to help with the contraction of skin after the procedure.
Most patients experience very little discomfort during their SmartLipo procedure and are able to return to work in two or three days postoperatively. While the neck, abdomen, and thighs are the areas most commonly-treated with this approach, virtually any region of unwanted fat on the body can be improved with SmartLipo.
