Skin Cancer 101: Basal Cell Carcinoma The three most commonly diagnosed skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Of these, basal cell carcinoma is the most common. In fact, approximately 75% of diagnosed cases of skin cancer tend to be this type.
Although it may sound strange, I often tell my patients that if they are going to get a skin cancer then the basal cell is the one to get. This is because they tend to grow very slowly, and rarely if ever metastasize (spread to other organs of the body). However, they can be locally destructive and therefore early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are necessary. Basal cell skin cancer can appear in a variety of ways which can make it difficult for the non-dermatologist to diagnose. It may appear as bump or sore that just doesn’t heal. It may also present as a discolored area of skin. When basal cell carcinoma is suspected, a dermatologist will usually complete a skin biopsy to determine and confirm that diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma or any other type of skin cancer. Considering that this form of skin cancer tends to be slow growing it has a very good prognosis. Depending on the type and location of the skin cancer an appropriate treatment is selected. Various treatments include surgical excision, topical medications, cryotherapy and radiation therapy. If you are concerned about a spot or area of your skin that is changing shape, growing larger, or is bleeding or itching, then it is time to schedule an appointment with a qualified dermatologist like Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O. of Southeastern Dermatology Consultants. Dr. Doppelt and his staff can assist you with any skin care concerns, and can help address any strange or unusual spots on your skin that may be raising concern. Related FAQ's
